"
I enjoyed the class so much I'm going to take it again -- probably for the
rest of my life. Great teacher!" About Janet Berryhill Yoga I have been studying yoga since 1990, and teaching since 1997. I teach and study mostly Iyengar Yoga, which is a type of Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga is the study of physical poses that develop a quiet mind and healthy body. This art first developed 2000 years ago in India. Iyengar Yoga is named for the great teacher, B.K.S Iyengar, who is in his 80's now. He has worked many years to bring the teaching of yoga to ordinary people so that all can benefit. Iyengar has dedicated his life to synthesizing modern physiological research with the ancient art of yoga. He worked to discover the physiological principles that underlie the postures, then developed specific instructions on how each part of the body should be positioned in order to get the most benefit from each pose. When I first started yoga in 1990, I signed up for a general Hatha Yoga Class. My next class happened, by chance, to be an Iyengar Class. Although I enjoyed the Hatha Yoga class, I could tell immediately that Iyengar yoga made me feel better. I was hooked, and have enjoyed practicing Iyengar Yoga since. For the many folks that are not flexible, Iyengar pioneered the use props to help students work on a pose that they are not able to do fully. This means that these students can now receive the same benefit from poses as more flexible students. For those that are ill or under stress, Iyengar devised ways to modify postures so that they were restorative and encourage the body's internal healing processes to do its work. This is called restorative yoga, and most practitioners include a few restorative classes in their sessions. I am big fan of restorative yoga, and always introduce my students to it. Credentials Janet's yoga teacher training has been approved by the Yoga Alliance, which is a national organization that sets teacher training standards for yoga teachers. The Yoga Alliance has two levels of standards, one is a 200-hour standard, the other is a 500-hour standard. Janet has been approved at the 200-hour standard, and am working towards the 500-hour standard. You can read more about teacher training standards at www.yogaalliance.org. Their website lists all the yoga teachers in the US that meet the national standards. In addition,
Janet has been certified in restorative yoga
by Judith Lasater, teacher and author of Relax and Renew,
and Living Your Yoga. Just call me at 651-773-9687 to ask any yoga-related question or request more information. "I've
probably had 13 different yoga teachers in the past 30 years. Janet
Berryhill is one of the best." |
