Recommended Books Beginner Guides
If you're a
beginner and only plan to buy one book, buy this one. I found this book at the
library in 1999, and it forever changed the way I teach beginning students. Dworkis
starts with something I have never seen in a yoga book -- clearly defined instructions on
how to assess your own flexibility, combined with specific instructions on how the pose
should be done depending on your level of flexibility. The book has many detailed and
helpful pictures. There is another key piece at the beginning of the book that I
have not seen in other yoga books: a section where you assess your exercise
personality. Do you have an aggressive, moderate, or easy-going approach to
exercise? He has insightful suggestions for each personality while working in the each
pose. This yoga in this book is based on the Iyengar method of yoga.
The author of
this book studied with B.K.S Iyengar since she was a child. Iyengar is considered
the modern pioneer of yoga. He has dedicated his life to synthesizing modern physiological
research with the ancient art of yoga. This book has simple instructions and
colorful step-by-step pictures that are easy to follow. My favorite part of this
book is the section that lays out a 10-week day-by-day practice. Many books list
poses to practice each day, but this book's lesson plan includes small pictures of each
pose to make it easy to visualize the day's lesson. This mean a beginner can easily
go from one pose to the next, without frantically turning pages to find a picture of the
next pose in the lesson. Restorative Yoga
This is a
remarkable book about restorative yoga. Lasater presents nurturing postures that when
practiced regularly, will help you heal the effects of a busy life. You'll love her
encouraging tone, and the quiet black-and-white pictures will make you relax the moment
you turn the pages. When I first discovered restorative yoga, I found this book to
guide my practice. I liked the book so much I went to study with Judith.
She is a wonderful a teacher -- in person or in these pages. Comprehensive Guide
If you plan to pursue Iyengar yoga beyond a beginning level, this is the book for you. The poses have more detailed and subtle instruction than the beginning books, and many more difficult poses are covered. Each pose is rated, so you know it's level of difficulty. It also outlines series of poses that will help alleviate particular health problems.
